Obligatory See-you-at-FlashForward post!
I’ll be walking the entire distance from my home to FlashForward Boston (a whole 15 minutes!). Lots of interesting lectures scheduled.. I’m especially looking forward to Chris Allen’s Building red5 applications, Mario Klingemann’s lecture on generative art, and of course Carlos Ulloa’s Papervision lecture (sure to be packed), among others!
Hope to see you there!
The last question
Not flash related, but if you have ten or fifteen minutes to yourself and haven’t read it before, I highly recommend this short story by Isaac Asimov.
Fonts to code by
I’ve recently switched my default Flex Builder font to Consolas, and so far I’m really happy with it. To me, it seems a lot clearer to read than Courier. The only caveat is that you have to enable ClearType on windows or else it looks like crap (Display Settings -> Appearance tab -> Effects.. -> Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts.)

You can download the installer from Microsoft here.
Whats your favourite coding font?
BFPUG
I went to my first Boston Flash Platform User Group (BFPUG) meeting last night. Met some interesting people whose names I’ve seen before. But now I have faces to put with those names.
On August 23rd, Ted Patrick is flying in all the way from the Adobe mothership to give a talk on Flex.. so I’ll definitely be there for that one.
So, if you’re in or around Boston and even remotely interested in Flash, why not come along?
Oh yeah.. I also got an orange Adobe pen. BONUS!
Moving MovieClips in AS3
All this new functionality is a lot to take in at the moment, but I noticed something new about the DisplayObjectContainer class (which is inherited by MovieClip). In particular the addChild and removeChild methods which replace the traditional attachMovie.
Does this mean that you can remove a movie clip from one target and place it in another without losing the MovieClip’s state?
Theres lots of cool new stuff, and not enough time outside of work to look at it all!
Flash player 8.5
With the upcoming release of Flash Player 8.5, I wonder if the Flash developer community will be able to unlock it’s secrets before the Flash 9 alpha, just like they did with Flash player 8. Or did Macromedia go to the trouble of hiding or disabling the new AS3 goodness?
Just a thought.
Back it up!
My laptop hard drive died the other day. I tried various recovery tools but I couldn’t even get my bios to detect it when I connected it to my desktop. Bleh!
So in addition to the cost to replace the drive, I lost a game I’ve been working on and some irreplacable photos downloaded from my camera. But still, I have no-one to blame but myself!
So here is a friendly reminder that if you don’t have an automated process to back up your stuff: Go back up your files.. right now.. no excuses!
